How to Read a Medium-Voltage Switchgear Datasheet
First check that the equipment voltage and insulation characteristics fit the network. Then verify continuous current and short-circuit duties, enclosure and internal-arc requirements, switching/protection functions, service conditions, dimensions and the precise standard/test basis.
01
Voltage is the beginning, not the answer
A headline such as 12 kV, 24 kV or 36 kV does not describe an entire product's electrical duty. Check the rated voltage and applicable insulation withstand levels against the system specification.
02
Current ratings
Continuous current, short-time withstand current and interrupting capacity address different operating conditions. Comparing the wrong columns can invalidate a specification.
03
Installation criteria
IP classification, internal arc designation, operating temperature, altitude and footprint should be interpreted with the actual product documentation.
04
Function and controls
A product's SLD, protection arrangement, interlocks, auxiliary wiring and control interfaces determine what it can perform in the installation.
05
Documents to request
Current datasheet, GA, SLD, approved standards statement, available test evidence, installation requirements and project-specific deviations.
06
Common mistakes
- 01Treating a nominal voltage as proof of full compatibility
- 02overlooking fault level
- 03comparing unlike IP/IAC values
- 04selecting from an outdated catalogue
- 05assuming every optional control feature is included
07
Conclusion
Technical selection is a multi-parameter decision. Use the full rated-duty matrix and document deviations before ordering.
