Researching Alternatives to F-Gas Insulation
Insulation choices have long-term implications for electrical equipment design and environmental strategy. C-SEC has publicly discussed R&D on a switchgear approach using factory-made dry air in place of SF6. The July 2026 account describes the technology as undergoing type testing and validation.

Why this research matters
SF6 has been widely used for its electrical properties but is a potent greenhouse gas. Development of alternative insulation approaches requires careful engineering across insulation coordination, switching, enclosure design, temperature, reliability, maintenance and qualification.
03
What has been publicly discussed
Research and development of an F-gas-free medium-voltage technology concept using dry air; validation/testing in progress as reported in July 2026.
